আন্তর্জাতিক গণমাধ্যমের তথ্যানুসারে, ‘মিনি মুন’ বা একটি ছোট চাঁদ প্রায় দুই মাস আমাদের গ্রহের চারপাশে ঘুরবে। পৃথিবীর মাধ্যাকর্ষণের প্রভাবে চলতি বছরের ২৯ সেপ্টেম্বর থেকে ২৫ নভেম্বর পর্যন্ত পৃথিবীকে প্রদক্ষিণ করবে গ্রহাণুটি।
নাসা অর্থায়িত অ্যাস্টেরয়েড টেরেস্ট্রিয়াল-ইমপ্যাক্ট লাস্ট অ্যালার্ট সিস্টেম (অ্যাটলাস) ব্যবহার করে, গত ৭ আগস্ট ‘২০২৪ পিটি৫’ নামের গ্রহাণুটি শনাক্ত করা হয় বলে জানা গেছে।
আমেরিকান অ্যাস্ট্রোনমিক্যাল সোসাইটির রিসার্চ (আরএনএএএস) নোটে প্রকাশিত এক প্রতিবেদন অনুসারে, গ্রহাণুটি খুব বেশি বড় নয়। এটি মাত্র ১০ মিটার (৩৩ ফুট) ব্যাস বিশিষ্ট। পৃথিবীর চারপাশ প্রদক্ষিণে ‘২০২৪ পিটি৫’ তার ৫৩ দিনের মেয়াদে সম্পূর্ণ কক্ষপথ ঘুরতেও সক্ষম হবে না।
কার্লোস দে লা ফুয়েন্তে মার্কোস এবং রাউল দে লা ফুয়েন্তে মার্কোস রচিত আরএনএএএস রিপোর্টে বলা হয়েছে, পৃথিবীর মাধ্যাকর্ষণের একটি প্রবণতা রয়েছে গ্রহাণুগুলোকে আকর্ষণ করার এবং তাদের কক্ষপথে টেনে নেয়ার।
এতে আরও বলা হয়, এই গ্রহাণুগুলো কখনও কখনও আমাদের গ্রহের চারপাশে এক বা একাধিক সম্পূর্ণ ঘূর্ণন সঞ্চালন করে, যখন অন্য সময় তারা একটি কক্ষপথ সম্পূর্ণ ঘোরার আগে পৃথিবীর উপবৃত্তাকার পথ থেকে দূরে চলে যায়।
এদিকে, ২০৫৫ সালে এই গ্রহাণুটি আবারও ‘দ্বিতীয় চাঁদ’ হিসেবে পৃথিবীর কক্ষপথে ফিরে আসবে বলে জানিয়েছেন বিজ্ঞানীরা।
The world is about to witness a rare cosmic event. ‘Earth’s moon’ is getting a temporary junior companion. That is, Earth is getting two moons for a temporary period of time. But how?
According to international media reports, the ‘mini moon’ or a small moon will orbit our planet for about two months. The asteroid will orbit the Earth from September 29 to November 25 of this year, due to the influence of Earth’s gravity.
The asteroid, named ‘2024 PT5’, was reportedly detected on August 7 using the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS).
According to a report published in the Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society (RNAAS) , the asteroid is not very large. It is only 10 meters (33 feet) in diameter. 2024 PT5 will not be able to complete a full orbit around Earth in its 53-day period.
The RNAS report, written by Carlos de la Fuente Marcos and Raúl de la Fuente Marcos, states that Earth’s gravity has a tendency to attract asteroids and pull them into orbit.
It also says that these asteroids sometimes make one or more complete revolutions around our planet, while other times they drift away from Earth’s elliptical path before completing an orbit.
Meanwhile, scientists have said that this asteroid will return to Earth’s orbit as a ‘second moon’ in 2055.
